Fieldwork in Madagascar

Fieldwork in Madagascar

Piotr has returned to Kraków after six weeks of travels and fieldwork in Madagascar - combining a collaborative research trip with Insect Biome Atlas project, with Auchenorrhynchan insect collecting as a part of the NCN Sonata Bis grant. Check out some of the photos!

Piotr returns from fieldwork in Madagascar

For a part of the trip, Piotr, Ela, and other colleagues from Insect Biome Atlas project have visited several of the IBA sampling sites, and organized a workshop for Madagascar governmental officials, NGOs, academics and students on the importance and cutting-edge approaches of insect monitoring and conservation. That was a great opportunity to not only learn about Madagascar biodiversity from the top experts, but also pass on latest results, approaches and skills to Malagasy biologists.

Later, together with a collaborator Adam Stroiński, they collected insects within several different habitats in Central Madagacar. Preliminary observations suggested that they have collected many more species of Auchenorrhyncha than has been described over 200 years of taxonomic research on the Red Island!
